About Us

About Us

The Center for Economic Progress encourages self-sufficiency and promotes economic prosperity among working families in Illinois and across the country.

Since 1990, we have built a reputation for innovative programs and forward-thinking initiatives -- using the tax code to help low-wage families achieve financial stability. Operating at the local, state, and national levels, our agency provides direct services, education, and advocacy to achieve our goals.

With offices in both Chicago and Springfield, Illinois, the Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

History

The Center for Economic Progress was founded in 1990 by Michael O’Connor, a veteran public benefits lawyer. Formerly the Center for Law and Human Services, the agency first focused on helping homeless families and individuals access services.
